Excavations are ongoing at Magellan's Cave.

Magellan's Cave is a massive cavern located in the Vayots Dzor region, near the site where the world's oldest shoe was discovered years ago. In the 1940s, Magellan Arakelyan, a resident of Areni, spotted a small opening in the gorge near Noravank and realized there was a vast space inside. In October 1988, when a group of speleologists led by Eduard Sargsyan was exploring the area's caves, Magellan guided them to this location; the cave was subsequently named in his honor. It ranks third in size among caves open to tourism, following similar caves in Spain and China. For the third year, an Armenian-Czech expedition has been conducting excavations in the cave, with the aim of gaining an archaeological picture of the gorge and developing the sites for tourism purposes.
