The first contemporary art festival in Shvanidzor.

A large-scale project to transform Shvanidzor—a settlement in the Meghri community of Syunik—into a contemporary art center has moved into the implementation phase; the initiative was developed by the "Dialogue of Cultures" organization and approved by the government just three years ago, in 2023. From October 3 to 10, the Shvanidzor Contemporary Art Festival was held there with the support of the Ministry of Culture and within the framework of the "Meghri: CIS Cultural Capital" program. The event transformed Shvanidzor—with its unique historical-cultural character and exceptional location—into a creative festival oasis, significantly contributing to the policy of decentralizing national culture and art. This program is significant because it marks the first time a major international festival is being held in the Syunik region—specifically in the village of Shvanidzor. The event features masterclasses and panel discussions, drawing the attention of international artists to Shvanidzor, a settlement located on the Iranian border; this also enables artists living and working in Iran to travel to the region—and specifically to Shvanidzor—to showcase their work. Dedicated to painting and drawing, the festival has welcomed renowned artists from Iceland who are presenting films about Icelandic painters and draftsmen during the event. Overall, a primary goal of the program is to promote cultural tourism and foster the development of the local community.
